Affiliate Marketing Methods: Plenty of Fish (PoF)

There are many different ways to advertise products, services, websites, and various affiliate offers. Of all the marketing methods I’ve used, Plenty of Fish is one of the most dynamic. However, like every form of marketing, PoF has it’s positive and negative aspects. So why not start with the positive?

Positives:

1) The greatest thing about Plenty of Fish is the ability to target PoF users based on an intense 24 different criteria! I’ve attached a screenshot of a sample campaign that I set up for the purposes of showing you all, as well as the general demographics of PoF:

As you can see, there’s the generic targeting criteria which you can find on most ad platforms such as age, country, marital status, education status, etc. But PoF also gives you the ability to select the users income, ethnicity, religion, profession, drinking/smoking habits, height, hair color, and more! This really allows you to deeply target the exact demographic that you’re looking to target. For example, as you can see in the screenshot, this ad was intended to target a Christian dating offer. So I selected Christianity for religion (instantly removing all other religions, as they are not who the dating offer wants signing up), the countries accepted by the offer (Canada, Australia, United States), and started the split testing by a 10 year age range (over 25 years old, as the offer specifies). With simply 3 criteria selected, you can see how much more narrowed down the viewers of my ad will be.

2) Although Plenty of Fish is a dating website, their incredible targeting system allows one to advertise a variety of products and offers, rather than just dating offers, which are obviously quite popular, but extremely competitive. Basically, you’re not confined to what you think you would be confined to when advertising with PoF.

3) Although they don’t have 500,000,000 users like Facebook, PoF averages more than 2 billion page views per month (which is essential to the advertising structure of PoF), as well as 90 million unique visitors per month! This is a huge audience and your ads will certainly get tons of exposure.

Now for the negatives:

1) PoF is a CPM based ad platform. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but if you do not have a campaign with a high click-thru rate, you will spend a lot of money for few clicks, which is not very effective. You will have to optimize your campaigns and really choose quality images to get a successful campaign running. The problem with CPM based platforms only is that you have to work very hard on the ad to get a decent amount of clicks per thousands impressions to make it worthwhile to advertise here. If they had a CPC platform as well, you’d be able to test out the conversion rate of the product with the PoF traffic, but without it, you have to test out the conversion rate after really optimizing the campaign and getting the clicks to the offer.

2) The lowest CPM bid accepted is $0.10, which if you don’t know what you’re doing can certainly add up quickly. I’d recommend trying out Facebook Ads first before trying to conquer PoF. At least at FB, you’re able to develop a decent CPC campaign and convert it into a CPM campaign (if your click-thru rate is high enough that it will be worthwhile).

Overall, I’d say PoF is an excellent form of marketing, and certainly will produce the quality leads/sales that you’re looking for!
